Decision 2008: Political News

This week Senator John McCain faced more staff resignations from his presidential campaign as his campaign starts to fall apart. McCain will not exit the race, even though he faces pressure from his staff and his budget. He no longer has any money to work with, and is off to California so he can get some money to keep his campaign running. Offices in Iowa, Michigan and several other parts of the country are shutting down and his campaign is now centering their attention on New Hampshire and South Carolina. McCain admits his campaign is in trouble, but isn't over yet. Its way too early. Ohio is looking to move its primary closer to NH and SC like Florida did weeks ago. With these new events SC and NH are pressured to move their contests to earlier dates. With these new states moving their contests earlier and earlier we may see a start to the presidential primary season in late or early December of 2007. Its now likely in fact I only see the campaign beginining a week earlier than expected. New polls from New Hampshire show U.S. Senator John Sununu in serious trouble in his re-election efforts. Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen who is likely going to be his challenger leads him 56%-34% according to a Research 2000 poll. 3 other unknown candidates barely trail Sununu showing how vulernable he really is. The Ames Straw poll in Iowa is nearing and candidates are working around the clock to get support before it takes place. Governor Mitt Romney is widely expected to take 1st place, but the rest of the pol is open, because of Fred Thompson's wait in entering the race. Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson expects to take 3rd while Sen. Sam Brownback feels he can win the poll. Mike Huckabee is hoping for a 4th or higher finish and if he doesn't he has stated he may think about quitting the race. With McCain and Giuliani not competiting and Thompson waiting on entering this could give a 2nd tier candidate a chance to shine and get into the 1st tier. I expect that Romney will win the straw poll hands down however. No competition for him.
